Ronaldo rescues Real Madrid with another last minute winner

It is hard to believe that lightning can strike twice in the space of a week, but Real Madrid are certainly glad that it has. If it was not for Cristiano Ronaldo and his two winning goals in the last gasps of Madrid’s last two La Liga games, then the club would find itself in real crisis, and a massive nine points behind fierce rivals Barcelona after just eight games.

As it is, Ronaldo’s penalty last week, with a little help from Pepe and the ref, snatched all three points from an unlucky Elche. This week was even more dramatic at Levante. The home side took the lead with less than four minutes on the clock, but super sub Alvaro Morata repeated last year’s heroics by firing Madrid level in the 90th minute.

It was the 94th minute when the magician Ronaldo waved the wand of his right foot and snatched the points again. Even then, we needed the help of a deflection to beat an extremely hard working and organised Levante. For long periods of the game, it looked like it would not happen, as they closed down hard and fast and made the most of the narrow pitch and a vocal and partisan home crowd, but Ancelotti must be delighted with the spirit shown by his players, which keeps us just five points off Barcelona with the first El Clasico of the season approaching.
