Alan Shearer, a legend for England at international level, and Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United at a domestic stage – says he believes Real Madrid are one of three teams he can see winning this years Champions League, and we wouldn’t mind a repeat of the heroics of 2014 ourselves.

Shearer has forged a deal with British sports bookmaker Coral in which he pens his thoughts in a regular feature on the site on the current goings on in world football.

It was an article written towards the end of last month, in which he mentioned his Champions League favourites for this year. The main focus in the article is Shearer describing how he believes Chelsea centre back John Terry is coming to the end of his career at the top of the English game.

“Mourinho desperately wanted to sign John Stones because there was always going to come a time when John Terry couldn’t keep going. It came to myself, Thierry Henry, it comes to everyone, and it is coming to John Terry.” The former Newcastle striker said.

Powerful words about Terry, but truthful ones – Terry has been at the top of the English game for years, it was always going to come to an end at some point.

Let’s get to the part where he mentions Real Madrid. Shearer begins to talk about Manchester City’s chances in Europe, and says: “Do I put them as one of the favourites? No I don’t, the three favourites are, like every year, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich.

“If you are asking me to tip an outsider, it may be Atletico Madrid. That would be an outside bet of mine at the minute, but I am reluctant to look past the big three.”

Madrid have begun their Champions League campaign in convincing fashion, with an opening 4-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk, followed by the 2-0 victory in Sweden over Malmö FF last week.

Those first two matches were about as easy as it will get for us, as we next have the tricky task of taking down a Zlatan Ibrahimovic inspired Paris St Germain side – in Paris.

Los Blancos are undefeated in La Liga too thus far this season, but sit second in the table behind Villarreal, but only by the one point. Seven games in we have four wins and three draws and a goal difference of +13, the highest in the league.

Madrid hasn’t had the worst of starts to the new season, and long may it continue.
