What does the future hold for Real Madrid starlet Martin Odegaard

Securing the services of one of the most talented young players in world football is a true symbol of Real Madrid’s ability to attract the very best to a club steeped in heritage and unparalleled success. Carlo Ancelotti certainly had one eye on the future for Los Blancos when he managed to sign much-coveted 16-year-old Martin Odegaard from Stromsgodset for £2.3 million – a teenager who has already won three international caps with Norway.

Odegaard, who became a regular for his club in his native country at the age of 15, could have picked from any of Europe’s most prestigious teams as his next destination, but the lure of plying his trade for Real Madrid proved too much for the teenage wonderkid. It remains to be seen what the future holds for the Norwegian international, but if his performances for Zinedine Zidane’s Castilla team in the Segunda B Division are anything to go by, Odegaard has all the ingredients to become one of the greatest players to represent Real Madrid. However, there is already speculation that the 16-year-old could be set for a loan move away from the Bernabau this summer, and with odds of Sergio Busquets leaving Barcelona shortening due to strong interest from Paris Saint-Germain and a number of English Premier League clubs, Odegaard could be another midfielder travelling to pastures new.

Special talent

Playing for the Castilla team between now and the end of the season should hopefully allow Odegaard to settle into life in Spain and adapt to Real Madrid’s style of play, and in Zidane has arguably the best mentor to develop even further and learn from one of the best players ever to grace the game. Los Blancos fans will undoubtedly be excited at the prospect of seeing their new teenage sensation strut his stuff at the Bernabau, although patience will be the nature of the game to ensure Odegaard is not rushed into the limelight too quickly. The 16-year-old has already impressed for Castilla in the few appearances he has made to date, with Odegaard displaying a wide array of skills and superb ball control, not to mention an eye for goal as shown in his first goal for the club against Barakaldo. Odegaard is a forward-thinking midfielder who can utilise a variety of passing techniques to open the play up and create chances for others.

Loan move?

Ancelotti has already admitted that Odegaard is ready for first team action despite being only 16 years old, with the Norwegian starlet included in Real Madrid’s Champions League squad. However, with a plethora of talent in midfield at his disposal, it seems unlikely that the teenager will feature in La Liga any time soon for Real Madrid. This opens the possibility of a loan deal to another top-flight team in Spain who can provide Odegaard with regular action that he requires to continue his development. Villarreal have already been linked with a season-long loan move for the 16-year-old, with the Yellow Submarines already enjoying an excellent relationship with Real Madrid following the hugely successful loan spell for Denis Cheryshev who has significantly benefited from regular first-team football. Moving to El Madrigal would provide an excellent opportunity for Odegaard to make his mark in La Liga and harness his considerable talent which can only benefit Real Madrid and Ancelotti in the future.
