Will Real Madrid have to change system with Khedira out?

You would think a team club like Real Madrid, with a stellar squad assembled from the world’s best players, would be able to cope with the loss of a player. Apart from Cristiano Ronaldo, who is unique, Madrid should have plenty of options, but there is serious concern among Madrid fans and pundits in Spain that the loss of Sami Khedira could be a real problem.

The German midfielder, who damaged his cruciate ligament in the friendly against Italy on Friday, is thought to be the only player of his kind in the team. There are others who play in the same position, like Alonso, Modric and the new signings Casemiro and Illarramendi, but they are all different.

Khedira often plays alongside one of these and brings energy and aggression as well as linking the defence and attack, so there is a thought that Carlo Ancelotti may have to shuffle his pack a bit and change the system. The coach has only just got the players used to his system in the first place, so the last thing he wants is to rip it up.

However, Madrid are already in danger of falling too far behind Barcelona in La Liga, so having to experiment when the league restarts is far from ideal. For me, Madrid now need to play a double pivot with one player more defensive and one more creative. For instance, either Modric or Alonso with the passing ability to instigate forward play, alongside Illaramendi or Casemiro who must be disciplined.

It will be interesting to see which way the Italian goes when Madrid travel to Almeria next Saturday.
